Concepts and Pedagogy of Media Chinese for Advanced Learners

Abstract
Media Chinese course can provide students with the opportunity to read, listen, watch and browse Chinese news online, which can not only improve students' ability of reading, listening, expressing and analyzing Chinese, but also make students know the important news and the latest social issues in China. However, in view of the fact that current American college students are generally skeptical about the credibility of news media, unfamiliar with Chinese news web sites, and the mainstream news reports in both China and the United States have their own positions that cannot be abandoned, this paper proposes to transform the language-focused curriculum of Media Chinese course with the insights of multi-literacies theory, media literacy and news literacy education, as well as integrating the development of early and ecological environment of Chinese news media. The conclusion of this paper is that a multi-perspective Media Chinese course, which improves language ability and cultivates media literacy, has an important and long-term impact on students' view of China and future China research application. Considering the large number of media consumers in the US and China, the author advocates that Media Chinese should receive more attention by the teaching Chinese as a foreign language community. Media Chinese could be extended and elevated from a language-focused course to a content-based course, to a Chinese for specific purpose course preparing learners to work in the media industries in the US or China.
